It was such a dark morning I almost didn’t realize it was time to get up. I was meeting mom at St. Patrick’s Church for mass at 9:00am and it was already past 8 and I was still in bed.
As I walked into town past the sign, Rosmeen Court, for my apartment complex I felt a little sad that today was my last day living there. I was going to Jean Marie’s house tonight.
Mass was really interesting because it was a Romanian Orthodox service like the one I happened upon the other day. Father Tudor said the majority of the mass in Romanian and tried to include some English passages just so mom and I would understand some of it. Romanian is a little like Italian so mom was able to pick up a little from time to time. The mass is a bit longer than our Roman Catholic one but also they do the sign of the cross at least 30 or so times throughout the service. There were some similar rituals to the Roman Catholic mass but there was no giving of the sign of peace and unless you’ve received confession before mass or was a child younger than 7 you were not allowed to receive the Eucharist. Interestingly the wine/water mixture was put in the chalice and Father Tudor than walked around to each one of us and we bowed our heads and he placed the base of the chalice on to top of our heads and I suppose said a prayer. The children including infants had the wine/water mixture dropped onto their tongues by the priest and it was incredible to see even the little toddlers line up with their arms folded across their chests and quietly go up to the priest. After getting the wine mixture they each then got a piece of bread. There was only one adult that went up and it turns out she had done confession earlier that morning. Everyone at the end of mass went up to Father Tudor and kissed a cross and was blessed with oils on our head and hands. Mom not knowing why she didn’t get to have the bread went over and took one of the remaining pieces that were in a basket near the alter.
We then headed off to the gym for some time in the Jacuzzi and steam room. When we arrived at the gym the sun could be seen through a veil of clouds which you can see in this picture but by the time we left the gym the clouds had parted and it was so bright and lovely. Mom was so excited about the sun we left the gym early to enjoy it. Jean Marie took us to Spidel where the crafts center is. It's right on the beach and now that the fog had lifted and some of the clouds had parted we had a beautiful view. We had a lovely lunch near the water and then some ice cream at Mauds in Salt Hill.
I had put off moving out of my apartment for as long as I could so we stopped off at the apartment to pick up my things and I fortunately caught Una as she was heading out so I was able to say buy although I’m sure I’ll see her for lunch before I go.
Now we are home just relaxing which is good too.
