Sunday - Monday (Cardiff & Bridgend)

Sunday

It’s another overcast day and mom keeps saying that we’ll be so thankful from this point forward whenever it’s sunny. Now as you all know I learned that about two and half months ago and this dreary weather is just reinforcing what I already know.

We’re staying at the Cardiff Center Mercure Hotel which is comfortable and so close to the center of town. Cardiff being the capitol of Wales is much more business oriented and although there are a few old buildings and large castle in the middle of town it’s mostly new developments and lots of shopping centers and business complexes. There are a few little shopping lanes with some boutiques but over all there isn’t much to see in the way of great old architecture.

Mom and I went to mass at St. David’s Catholic Cathedral which is right next to the St. David’s shopping mall. It’s a lovely old, very small Cathedral and they celebrated the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) a few days early and the Priest mentioned how he wasn’t pleased the Bishop made that decision. The Epiphany is normally celebrated on January 6 especially in the Latin countries.

We went by the Cardiff Castle which is directly in the center of town. It's pretty impressive and I love that part of the stone walls have large sculptures of animals climbing over them and I think were placed there to protect the castle.

We walked around the town center for a bit and when it got to cold stopped in for some hot beverages and ate the Welsh Cakes we bought at Marks and Spencers. Welsh Cakes are a cross between a scone and a muffin I suppose but they’re very yummy.

For dinner we had German and Italian sausages from an outdoor vendor in the town center. Yum, yum.

We are going to spend the evening just relaxing at the pool in our hotel’s sister hotel the Mercure Holland House hotel in spa.

Monday

Today brought some soft snow flurry's which came and went throughout the day. Overcast and cold but as long as it's not a blizzard we're doing fine.

Since it was cold we took a short trip to Bridgend where there's a discount outlet center and we shoppped a bit and then went to the movies to see the Fockers movie. The movie was lots of fun and then mom found this great cut-out for a new children's movie where you put your head in like your one of the characters so she just had to have her picture taken. It's another "where's mom" moment.

I think we needed a day just to relax and do nothing much. We had dinner at Thomas' restaurant and it was delicious. A very nice day.
